11 December 2022 – Riverside Oaks Golf Resort
We are proud to announce that Peter O’Malley was officially inducted as the 3rd Patron of Nomads Golf Australia on 11th December 2022 during a special ceremony held at Riverside Oaks Golf Resort. The induction was conducted by National President Kel Hirini, marking a significant milestone in the club's journey and strengthening its ties with the wider Australian golfing community.
About Peter O'Malley
Born in Bathurst, NSW, on 23 June 1965, Peter O'Malley has enjoyed a distinguished golfing career that began at Bathurst Golf Club — the host of the Jack Newton Junior Golf event and the Peter O'Malley Junior Masters, the longest-standing event on the JNJG calendar.
Peter’s junior and amateur career was nothing short of exceptional. He represented New South Wales in the Australian Men’s Interstate Series in 1985 and 1986, and claimed victories in key events such as the:
-
1985 NSW Medal
-
1986 Australian Junior Championship
-
Lake Macquarie Amateur
-
NSW Amateur
-
New Zealand Amateur
These achievements led to Peter representing Australia at the 1986 Eisenhower Trophy and the Sloan Morpeth Trophy, before turning professional in 1987.
A Professional Career to Remember
Peter found early success on the PGA Tour of Australasia before becoming a regular fixture on the European Tour. He made an immediate impact, finishing runner-up in his debut event at the 1989 Dubai Desert Classic, and went on to win three European Tour titles, including a legendary win at the Scottish Open, where he played the final five holes in seven under par to claim victory.
From 1989 to 2007, Peter consistently ranked in the Top 100 on the European Tour Order of Merit, with a peak position of 10th in 1995. Known for his extraordinary accuracy off the tee, he topped the European Tour’s driving accuracy rankings in 2001 and 2002.
He competed in 16 Major Championships, with Top-10 finishes in the 1997 and 2002 Open Championships.
Leadership and Recognition
Beyond the course, Peter made a significant impact on Australian golf through his leadership and service:
-
Served on the Board of the PGA of Australia (2010–2018)
-
Held the position of Chairman (2016–2018)
-
Awarded Life Membership of the PGA of Australia on 24 May 2022, an honour bestowed on only 50 individuals in the PGA’s 111-year history
A Patron of Purpose
Peter O’Malley’s induction as a Patron of Nomads Golf Australia reflects his deep connection to the game, his leadership, and his commitment to the values of fellowship, golf, and giving back — the very principles that define Nomads.
We are honoured to welcome Peter as our Patron and look forward to his continued involvement and inspiration within the Nomads community.
